Your "nope" is possible in my opinion if both sincerely want to recapture their friendship and are willing to put forth the (agreed-major)effort. I've maintained great friendships with every girlfriend I've ever had since high school - six of them (I'm old) and it has definitely been worth all the work. Great analogy, Carolyn.
