Heads up: The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance holds its 30th annual International Roadcheck June 6 through 8.
During the three-day event, CVSA-certified inspectors will conduct compliance, enforcement and educational initiatives throughout North America.
This year’s Roadcheck will focus on load securement. (CVSA photo)This year inspectors will emphasize cargo securement. While this is a normal part of CVSA’s Level I inspections, the organization said inspectors will highlight cargo securement as a reminder to drivers and fleets of its importance.
In 2016 the CVSA focused on brake safety issues.
During last year’s event:
- 42,236 Level I (the most stringent) inspections were performed
- 9,080 — 21.5 percent – of the trucks inspected were placed out of service
- 1,436 — 3.4 percent — drivers were placed out of service
Almost half — 4,111 — of the trucks placed out of service during the inspection blitz had brake problems.
Also last year, about half of the 1,436 drivers placed out of service had hours of service violations. CVSA statistics show:
- 46.8 percent violated HOS regulations
- 16.4 percent had false logbook entries
- 7.7 percent had improper endorsements
- 6.2 percent were disqualified drivers
- 1 percent had drug or alcohol violations
According to the CVSA, International Roadcheck is the “… largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world, with nearly 15 trucks or buses inspected, on average, every minute across North America during a 72-hour period.”
CVSA sponsors International Roadcheck with participation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (Mexico).
