FMCSA explains National Registry statistics

Linda Phillips, a health and welfare specialist with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, discussed the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners at the Mid-America Trucking Show, where she shared statistics on the registry’s usage.

The registry rule went into effect May 21, 2014. It stated that CMV driver examinations can only be completed by Certified Medical Examiners in the FMCSA’s National Registry.

These statistics are based on reports from the medical examiners. The examiners have reported over eight million driver medical exams. 

National registry statistics:

  • 8,567,502 medical examinations conducted
  • 8,282, 711 drivers received medical certificates (96.7 percent)
  • 5,043,107 (60.9 percent) received two-year medical cards
  • 2,654,873 (32 percent) received one-year medical cards
  • 454,614 (5.5 percent) received three-month medical cards
  • 130,117 (1.6 percent) received medical cards for less than three months
  • 212,443 drivers were temporarily disqualified (2.5 percent)
  • 70,279 were medically unqualified (0.8 percent)
