Highway Angel honor given driver potshumously

The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) has named Jack Yancer as its latest Highway Angel.

Yancer was a professional truck driver who died while helping someone in the course of his job on the road.

On May 21, 2014, Yancer had been driving on I-70 in Indianapolis, Ind. when he saw a car get hit and flipped by a drunk driver. He parked his tractor trailer safely on the side of the road and got out to try to make sure everyone was okay and attempt to direct traffic. Unfortunately, he was struck by another vehicle and died instantaneously.

The accident victim, a breast cancer survivor, was quoted in the local newspaper saying, “God bless [Yancer’s] family. They ought to be proud because he’s a hero to me. A lot of people wouldn’t stop to try and see if you’re okay. But he did. He cared enough.”

Highway Angels are normally presented with a certificate, patch, truck decal, and lapel pin. In this case, the materials were sent to the nominator, the president of a trucking company who is friends with Yancer’s brother. On behalf of Yancer, the company president presented the materials to Yancer’s brother.

TCA’s Highway Angel program is sponsored by EpicVue. Since the program’s inception in August 1997, hundreds of drivers have been recognized as Highway Angels for the unusual kindness, courtesy, and courage they have shown others while on the job.
