Lite relationship advice for truckers

April 17, 2011

How do you protect yourself?

  • Dear Carolyn,

You asked us how we protect ourselves on the road? Well, I use extra strength/extra large Trojans!!!

HAAAAAAAA!!

Frank

Dear Frank,

That was funny the first time. But you are about the 11th one to send this and well, I’ve moved from laughing to rolling my eyes. Really? This is a serious topic.

I’ve had a lot of comments on my story about staying safe on the road. It’s a serious topic and lots of truckers wrote in to say they were worried about what seems to be an increase in crimes against truck drivers. The recent murder of Truman Smith, still unsolved, really hit home.

According to the experts I talked to for this story, one of the best ways to protect yourself is to be aware of your surroundings. It’s your most powerful weapon.

Be careful out there,

I’m just say’n,

Carolyn

Your “Risky Business” story highlighted the dangers we face in loading and unloading trailers, especially in high crime areas, and provided sensible advice on staying safe. The patchwork of gun laws in different states doesn’t make it any easier for us. Thank you for being such a longstanding advocate for truckers.

Be alert. When I stop for the evening I loop my seatbelts through the handles of the doors and lock them down. If someone is going to get in, they will need to break the windows and unlock the door or the seatbelt…at that time I have a stungun, mace, and a mean little dog. If I am on the ground, I have found a swift, quick to the side of the knee will drop a person real fast. However, prevention is best. If you stop and need a bathroom break after dark, park and quickly go to the restroom or, better yet, carry a porta potty!
