Truckers traveling through New York state’s North Country have lost an old friend: Longway’s Truck Stop north of Watertown closed Friday, Oct. 14 after 50 years.

Mirabito Holdings, the Binghamton, New York energy company that owns the truckstop not far from I-81 and I-781, told “The Watertown Times” the business did not “warrant the investment” to keep the gas station and convenience store open.

However, Longway’s Diner located nearby is under different ownership and remains open.

The late Douglas Longway opened the gas station and diner in 1966.

The Times reported that the gas station was involved in an underground petroleum spill earlier this year.
