The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation plans to close the Interstate 83 South bridge starting at 9 p.m. Dec. 15 so a contractor can perform multiple repairs. The bridge is expected to reopen no later than 6 a.m. Dec. 18.

A detour will be in place during the closure:

  • To access southbound I-83 from north of the northern terminus of I-83, drivers should take southbound Interstate 81 to eastbound Route 581 to southbound I-83.
  • To access southbound I-83 from points south of Interstate 81, including Interstate 283, Route 322 and entry points along the I-83 corridor north of the closure in the Harrisburg area, drivers should take northbound I-83 to southbound I-81 to eastbound Route 581 to southbound I-83.

PennDOT said the closure may cause congestion along the detour route and adjacent roadways. Motorists should be alert and drive with caution.

Work includes expansion joint repairs, concrete deck repairs, and seal replacements, according to PennDOT.

Volk Transfer donates tractor-trailer to college

Seventy-five-year-old Volk Transfer recently donated a tractor-trailer to the CDL program at South Central College.

The two pieces of equipment will be used for behind-the-wheel training, a critical part of the college’s commercial driver’s license class.

“Thanks to this generous donation by Volk Transfer, students will have access to a vehicle right here at the college, rather than having to use their own or an employer’s truck,” said Kristin Underwood, SCC’s director of customized workforce education.

Volk Transfer is a privately held, family-owned carrier located in Mankato, Minnesota.
