Truckers News to host sleep apnea webinar
February 7, 2010
| by: Truckers News Staff
Truckers News will host a free one-hour webinar on sleep apnea at 8 p.m. (CST) on Feb. 11. Dr. Mark Berger, president and chief medical officer of Precision Pulmonary Diagnostics, will discuss how the disorder affects your health and how it could impact your CDL.
Berger has worked as consultant to large trucking fleets in developing sleep apnea programs. He has overseen the screening of nearly 15,000 commercial drivers and the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea in nearly 2,000 CDL holders.
Sleep apnea is expected to be a key issue in the next set of health regulations from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Schneider National is sponsoring the webinar.
Visit Trucker Webinars to register.

If you are find to have sleep apnea. Will you be able to still drive. Or what will 72% of driver be left to do?
i think this is akbunch of bs a nother way for thes doctors to make big money off truck drivers.you dont hear about pepole who drive cars having to do this.ther is as many if not more of them over waight but they dont hafe to do any of the testing , i think wat us truck drivers need to do is start sueing theis doctors for discramition and may be after they have forked out billons to us maybe they will think about.
You will be able to drive if you have it when you get treatment.
i am not a truck driver but my husband is but this new goverment regualation is for the birds that u must be under such and such weigh and with a neck of a certain size is bull****
as For the 72% of the drivers they will be left to fend for themselves as for our O SO GREAT GOVERMENT THEY DONT CARE!!!!!!!if there isnt any money in it for them but when the country shuts down because people cant get what they need then and maybe then they will realize that hey that wasnt such a good idea….BUT JUST REMEMBER THEY R THE GOVERMENT AND THEY DO NO WRONG
Everything the government is doing at present is designed to get as many drivers off the road as possible so a great shortage takes place. This will create a need for Mexican drivers. Just like you can’t hardly get a cab, find a conveince store worker, or find a motel where the worker isn’t from India. These poor folks will work cheap and put up with almost anything. I’m not against controlled immigration but these people are being used as instruments to destroy the middle class. Of course all this sleep apnea testing cost alot of money that does into the “right” hands as well.
Drivers will keep hiding their sleep apnea as long as the government keeps threatening them with their jobs. How about passing laws to guarantee them off time for treatment along with a paycheck so they aren’t driven into bankruptcy. The job lifestyle creates sleep apnea with the limited bad foods available to us. Then when the seasoned driver get to that stage of being overweight and develops sleep apnea the gov’t wants them fixed or fired. Only to be replaced by an inexperienced still in shape driver. Then in five years, he is expendable too.
i can see why were in bad health .the streas is so high thanks to the goverment.
I work with a person whose primary job is as a testor for a sleep apnea clinic. When I told him about this proposed ruling he couldn’t believe it. According to him there is absolutely no reason for this generalization. The medical board for the FMV is a joke. They’ve been bought and paid for, one owns apnea clinics and others have income producing interests in them. Typical government corruption.
By the way-most people don’t know they have sleep apnea, though they may notice they are tired. Sleep apnea: during sleep the person actually stops breathing long enough to bring them out of deep sleep. The result is the patient doesn’t get REM sleep which is the most important restful sleep. My husband is a trucker-his body mass is 35 (even the army couldn’t reduce it), he snores but never stops breathing. I had a friend whose body mass couldn’t have been more than 25 but he would stop breathing during sleep. The joke of a medical board just wants to line their own pockets just like the rest of our government.
I Hhave sleep apnea and it is no big deal as long as you use the cpap.If you let your co. streas you out it is your own fault stand up and be counted when they tell you to run and you don’t have the hours. If you are not over weight and out of shape you will be ok.
The COST of a Sleep Study can range anywhere from $600.00 – $2,000.00 and NO health insurance coverage will pay for it!!
Having been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea in late ’08, I REFUSED to have the sleep study or to get ANY further supposed treatment and I’m still driving….so far.
My wife, about 7 years ago, used a cpap for about a month and discovered that she couldn’t sleep very well because of two factors: the face piece AND the machine noise. The noise ran me out of the room and almost out of the house.
There may well be quieter models available yet MANY PEOPLE ARE NOT INTERESTED.
My B.M.I. is about 30 which means to those that designed such purposeless program, that I’m at minimum, 20+ Pounds OVERWEIGHT.
At 6’1″, my average weight is 205 and I’m NOT out of shape. For me to weigh in at 185, I would have LESS ENERGY and be UNFIT and MORE OF A SAFETY RISK if I could again even drive a CMV.
These programs are to ELIMINATE otherwise healthy and productive Persons and will as well be the signature line for the DEATH OF TRUCKING.
wow what a bunch of winers, i went throught all the test twice and got a c-pap machine i felt so great after after the first night i couldnt believe it. now my machine travels with me everywhere, and i have 7 friends who also suffer from apnea and have went on this machine and love it none of those 7 r truck drivers they did for thier own health benifit.
the ones that r complaining r the ones that r so freakin fat and lazy they dont want to take any blame for what they have become (FAT)
get off ur large buttocks and loose some wieght then maybe u wont have to worry about it.btw in only 180lbs and 5’11′tall im not fat and still suffer from apnea.
The hassle and expense of this sleep apnea test can be destructive to the business industry! I would like to suggest something that has impacted many truck drivers that I know who happen to have sleep apnea and use the CPAP. IF you are one of them then I would suggest a VERY large open ear! I have a few truckers friends who have been taking a natural remedy who USED to be on CPAP but are no longer on the machine. IN fact they have passed all their sleep apnea tests with a breeze unfortunately i cannot say that this will solve everyone’s sleep apnea problems, but has a made a significant change in ALL the truckers i KNow. The link to the product is here.. I cannot tell you much more about other than the fact is impacting these truckers in a VERY positive way! http://www.natures-rite-remedies.com/site/Sleep-Apnea-Relief-Treatment–b-1002.asp Check it out…
I agree with mark! What a bunch of winers and cry babies.
I wear a BI-PAP and sleep very good and have alot of energy. No drowsiness on the road.
To respond to the person who said Insurance won’t pay for the test is total Crap too. Alot of insurance companies will pay for most of the cost, depending on what kind of policy you have. Insurance companies know that this treatment will help prevent future problems, if the patient uses the machines, thus saving the insurance company money.
Fact of the matter is: If you snore, even a little bit, you have some form of Sleep Apnea.
As Mark points out, Truckers need to make the transition to a healthier life style, Lose some weight (get off your fat ASS and exercise), quit eating all the junk food on the road, quit eating at every buffet you come too. STOP SMOKING!!
All things that every truck driver can do!
No one else is to blame but the un-healthy truck drivers on the road (and there are many of them) Don’t believe me, just go to a Truck Stop and look at all the FAT OVERWEIGHT SLOBS that crawl in and out of trucks.
You all have a good day.
They are not saying that someone with a 35 bmi would never drive again. They are saying that if you have 35bmi then you would be tested for sleep apnea and if you don’t have it then your go to go ,if you do have it then you are going to have to get surgery or the cpap machine. It could save your life .and yes you will not be able to drive until you get tested and get treatment,so I suggest that you use your medical insurance and get the test done before you have to get your DOT physical. Then you can show them that you have been tested and you don’t have it or you been tested and you do have it but you have got treatment for it.So don’t wait until the last minute to prepare for your DOT physical.
