Con-way Truckload recently announced it was purchasing 635 new trucks, all with automated manual transmissions (AMT), and a modest kerfuffle ensued in the driving community. At the heart of the argument was this: “Real truckers shift their own gears!”

Well, Jack Roberts, executive editor at our sister publication Commercial Carrier Journal and the equipment guru at our other sister Overdrive, recently invoked two trucking authorities — B.B. King and ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons — in a column he wrote about AMTs.
