Five people die in collision between tractor-trailer and Illinois school bus

A school bus carrying three children and a semi-truck crashed on U.S. Route 24 in Illinois Monday, March 11, killing all passengers and both drivers.

The Illinois State Police is investigating the fatal crash involving a school bus in Rushville, west of Springfield, that occurred at about 11:30 a.m.. ISP said a school bus and a tractor-trailer hauling sand crashed on Route 24 just west of Parkview Road.

There was a total of five fatalities, which included the school bus driver, three children who were passengers on the bus, and the tractor-trailer driver.

According to the ISP, preliminary reports indicate the school bus was traveling east on Route 24 and for an unknown reason crossed over into the westbound lanes in front of the semi. The truck the school bus and both vehicles became engulfed in flames.

The following identifications have been confirmed by the Schuyler County coroner:

  • David Coufal, 72-year-old male from Browning, Illinois, the tractor-trailer driver
  • Angela Spiker, 57-year-old female from Rushville, Illinois, the bus driver
  • Maria Miller, 5-year-old female
  • Andrew Miller, 3-year-old male
  • Noah Driscoll, 3-year-old male

All three children were from Rushville, Illinois.

The ISP continues its investigation.
