Want to be part of new hours-of-service study?

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) seeks drivers to be part of a new hours-of-service study.

The agency says it will:

Pay drivers who participate

Pay their carriers if revenues are lost

Pay for the cost of data collection equipment

Drivers participating in the study, which was mandated as part of the hours-of-service rollback approved by Congress late last year, will have to:

Complete daily three-minute alertness tests

Maintain logs of when they sleep and when they are awake

Keep track of their daily caffeine consumption

Report on any sleepiness

Truckers will drive their normal routes during the study period.

During the study, one group of drivers will follow the restart rules that require the two 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. periods to be included in the 34-hour restart. The other group will take their 34-hour restart at hours they choose.

FMCSA will track crashes or near-crashes, along with driver fatigue, alertness and overall health.

See the FMCSA’s FAQ on participating in the study.
