Electronic logging devices like this one will be required in all trucks by Dec. 18 of next year.
The rule requiring truck drivers to use electronic logging devices instead of paper logs to record their duty status was upheld in federal court today, Oct. 31. This means all trucks will have to be equipped with the devices by Dec. 18 of next year.
The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, the federal court overseeing the case, voted unanimously to keep the mandate in place, securing a victory for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and a creating a setback for the Owner Operators Independent Drivers Association, which filed a lawsuit against the ELD rule.The court’s decision follows oral arguments made in Chicago on Sept. 13.
The decision does not change the rule’s exemption for pre-2000 year-model trucks, which are allowed to operate without an ELD.
