Josh Elmore of Lincolnton, NC, a truck driver for ABF Freight System, Inc., of Fort Smith, Ark., has been named a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA). He is being recognized for helping a motorist while her car was on fire.
On Feb. 20, Elmore was driving along Interstate 4, near Orlando, Fl., when he came upon a car that was smoking. The driver did not seem to realize that her car was on fire. Elmore blew his horn until the driver pulled over.
Using a fire extinguisher, he attempted to put out the flames, but every time the oil dripped, it would revive the flames. Within 10 minutes, the car was engulfed. By that time the fire department arrived and put out the fire, the car had burned down to the metal in the seats, and its tires were melted.
The driver was very grateful for Elmore’s help and later wrote an email to his company, stating, “He helped and comforted me when I was so scared, and I am so thankful to him for that!”
Elmore, who has been driving for ABF since 2006, says that his dad also drove for the company.
For his willingness to help, TCA has presented Elmore with a certificate, patch, lapel pin, and truck decal. ABF Freight System, Inc. also received a certificate acknowledging that one of its drivers is a Highway Angel.
