New Jersey enacts truck travel restrictions

Citing the “anticipated severity of the impending winter storm,” New Jersey State Police enacted commercial vehicle travel restrictions. New Jersey joins Pennsylvania in restricting truck travel, has expanded the list of highways with 45 mph speed limits.

Effective today, Feb. 20 at 9 a.m., commercial vehicle travel restrictions are in place for:

  • I-195 (entire length)
  •  I-78 (entire length)
  • I-80 (entire length)
  • I-280 (entire length)
  • I-287 (entire length)
  • I-295 (entire length)
  • I-676 (entire length)
  • I-76 (entire length)

The commercial vehicle travel restriction does not apply to:

  • New Jersey Turnpike
  • Garden State Parkway
  • Atlantic City Expressway

The commercial vehicle travel restriction applies to:

  • All tractor-trailers
  • Empty straight CDL-weighted trucks
  • Passenger vehicles pulling trailers
  • Recreational vehicles
  • Motorcycles

Trucks already in New Jersey are encouraged to use truck stops or rest areas during the restriction, according to a statement from the state police. The troopers also ask drivers to not park on shoulders to allow for snow removal.

The troopers’ statement adds:

“Residents and motorists should avoid driving unless you are an essential employee needed for emergency response. If you do not have to be on the roads during the storm, please stay home. If you must go out, drive slowly, fill your gas tank, charge your phone, pack blankets, water and non-perishable food items.”

In  Pennsylvanian, PennDOT this morning expanded the list of roadways with a 45 mph limit including:

  • I-70
  • I-78
  • I-79 – Exit 105 to West Virginia Line
  • I-80 – Ohio State Line to Clinton/Union County Line
  • I-81 – Maryland State Line to I-78
  • I-83
  • I-99
  • I-279
  • I-283
  • I-376
  • I-579
  • PA 28 – I-279 to US 422
  • PA 283 (SR 300)
  • PA 581
  • US 30 – York & Lancaster County only (District 8)
  • US 15 – Maryland State Line to PA 581
  • US 22 – Cambria/Indiana County Line to I-99 (District 9)
  • US 22/322 – Perry/Juniata County Line to I-81 (District 8)
  • US 219
  • US 222 – US 30 to Berks County Line (District 8
  • PA Turnpike – Toll Road 43
  • PA Turnpike – Toll Road 66
  • PA Turnpike – I-76 (Ohio State Line to New Stanton, PA)
  • PA Turnpike – I-376
