Briefly: Kenan Advantage Group acquires Louisiana's TransVac

Ohio-based Kenan Advantage Group recently announced it had acquired bulk tank hauler TransVac.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Abbeville, Louisiana-based TransVac provides tank transportation of chemicals, plastics, petroleum products and water treatment products. The company also provides disposal services for drilling muds from oil and gas wells.

TransVac has 45 power units and 43 drivers, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's SAFER website.

“There is so much upside to bringing TransVac and its skilled employees into the KAG family of companies,” said John Rakoczy, executive vice president of operations at KAG Specialty, in a news release. “The combination provides us with a highly specialized fleet of trailing assets that will allow us to expand our service offering to existing chemical customers with additional capacity, especially in the Louisiana and Arkansas markets.”

North Canton, Ohio-based KAG is the largest tank trucking company in North America, with a fleet of about 5,800 tractors across its various brands, according to the FMCSA, and It operates some 300 terminals.

Contract for Francis Scott Key Bridge announced

The Maryland Transportation Authority Board today approved a $73 million contract (Phase 1) that awards Kiewit Infrastructure Co. as the progressive design-builder for the complete design and construction of the I-695 Francis Scott Key Bridge replacement. The rebuild project is slated to begin in 2025 and the replacement bridge is expected to open in Fall 2028.  

The bridge was destroyed in March when a containership lost power and slammed into one of the bridge's support structures, closing the Port of Baltimore to ship traffic for several months. The crash and bridge collapse also claimed the lives of six workers performing maintenance on the bridge. 

The MDTA is using a progressive design-build process, which the agency said brings on board a project delivery team under one entity and a single contract to provide both design and construction services. The MDTA said it will work to foster collaboration among the project team, local communities and stakeholders, ensuring open communication and inclusive partnership opportunities, particularly for small and disadvantaged businesses. The project scope of work and accelerated timeline will require a substantial amount of skilled labor to complete the construction expeditiously, safely and reliably.     

The MDTA Board also approved the temporary suspension of toll collection on the Interstate 695/Exit 44 turnaround until the completion of the rebuild project. The MDTA began this pilot program in May to mitigate the effect on local traffic while providing truck and commercial vehicles with direct and easy access to the Port of Baltimore, ensuring minimal disruption to surrounding communities and traffic.
