A trucker died in a collision and fire involving three trucks in northwest Indiana earlier this week.

The crash occurred at about 10 p.m. Monday, Aug.4 near mile marker 218 on southbound Interstate 65 near Rensselear, which is about 50 miles south of Gary.

Reports say traffic had slowed at a construction site, and a red bobtail was stopped in the right lane. An approaching blue tractor-trailer, could not stop so swerved into the media where it struck a cable barrier.

Yet another tractor-trailer approached the stopped traffic, colliding with the red bobtail. Both vehicles caught fire.

The red bobtail's driver escaped, but the driver of the second tractor-trailer died in the fire.

It took several fire departments more than 12 hours to extinguish the blaze, which caused damage to the highway and required repairs before it could be reopened.

None of the drivers was identified.

Police continue their investigation.
