Numerous competing online petitions have cropped up in the wake of a recent triple-fatal Florida Turnpike accident with millions of people signing them.
Three people died when their minivan struck the trailer of a tractor-trailer driven by Harjinder Singh as he was making an illegal U-turn. Singh faces three charges of vehicular homicide, which include a combined possible sentence of 45 years in prison.
More than 3 million people have signed the petition titled "Plea for Fair Sentencing", which was started on Change.org by Manisha Kaushal of Adelaide, Australia. Change.org today said the petition garnered more than 3 million signatures in just five days, making it the fastest growing petition of 2025.
The Change.org petition says in part, "We, the undersigned, urge Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Board of Executive Clemency to re-examine and reduce the sentence for a 28-year-old truck driver involved in a fatal U-turn crash on Florida’s Turnpike in South Florida. This was a tragic accident — not a deliberate act. While accountability matters, the severity of the charges against him does not align with the circumstances of the incident."
There has been no trial or sentence related to the accident yet.
Another Change.org petition, this one titled, "Reduce Harzinder Singh's Sentence for Unintentional Mistake," has been signed by more than 100,000 people.
There are also others, each with several thousand signatories, advocating on Sing's behalf.
However, another petition, this one started by a man who says he is a truck driver, urges the deportation of those who signed the petition seeking leniency for Singh.
Titled "Deport Supporters of Harjinder Singh's Commutation," and started by Hugh Mann of Tampa, the petition with more than 43,000 signatures says, "I am a truck driver and a heritage American, and I'm sick of my nation and profession being used as a dumping ground. When Harjinder Singh, the Indian truck driver, attempted an illegal U-turn on the interstate, it resulted in a tragic accident that took the lives of three innocent people. Yet, over 500,000 individuals have signed a petition to commute his sentence, showing disregard for justice and the value of these lives.
"These signatories not only undermine the legal system but also pose a potential threat to public safety by advocating leniency for someone whose actions led to irreversible consequences. It's crucial that our country sends a clear message: we will not tolerate such recklessness, nor will we shelter those who support it."
