The crackdown on non-citizens holding commercial driver's licenses became a stark reality for almost 1,800 truckers in Indiana last week.
The state's Bureau of Motor Vehicles had sent out letters March 16 informing the CDL holders their licenses would be revoked as of April 1. That was the day a new federal law law and an new Indiana statute restricting non-domiciled CDLs.
Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy has been calling out states for their practices of issuing non-domiciled CDLs. Many states were audited ny the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and several were threatened with the loss of highway funds if they didn't change their procedures.
The crackdown comes after a series of high-profile fatal accidents with non-citizen drivers at the wheels of tractor-trailers.
Both the House and Senate have had bills introduced addressing the issue and also requiring CDL testing be administered only in English.
