Walmart driver wins West Virginia competition's grand championship

A Walmart driver won the 4-axle class and the grand championship at the West Virginia Trucking Association’s 2026 Truck Driving Championship, held recently at the Taylor County Fairgrounds in Grafton, West Virginia.

The Team Championship Award went to XPO, and the Rookie of the Year award was won by Thomas Smith, a driver for DHL

Class winners include:

  • Straight Truck: Nickolas Backes, Pitt
  • 3-Axle: Jerrold Friend, FedEx Freight
  • 4-Axle: Roy Smith, Walmart Transportation
  • 5-Axle Van: Alex Atkins, Pitt Ohio
  • Tank Truck:Larry Gorby, XPO
  • Flatbed: Chris Wigal, DHL
  • Sleeper Berth: William Adkins, FedEx Freight
  • Twins: Stephen Hartman, FedEx Freight
  • Step Van: Brian Ash, FedEx

Kenneth Grimmett of XPO had a perfect score on the written exam, and Justin Moody of Walmart Transportation had a perfect score on the pre-trip inspection.
