The for-hire trucking industry dropped 5,500 jobs in April, according to the Department of Labor’s monthly report. That’s the industry’s first month-to-month employment dip since August.
For-hire trucking industry employment totaled 1.4708 million jobs in April, the DOL reported. The agency said that is nearly 17,000 more jobs than the same month last year.
The economy as a whole added 164,000 jobs on a seasonally adjusted basis in April, and the country’s unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent.
The transportation and warehousing sector, which encompasses trucking, added just 400 jobs in the month. The construction industry added 17,000 jobs in April, and the manufacturing segment gained 24,000 jobs.
Trucking’s total is based on payroll statistics of employers and does not account for those who change jobs in the month or for those working for private fleets.
