Pitt Community College recently celebrated its new CDL training program’s first graduates. The first class kicked off May 20 after a successful interest session in January, attended by about 150 people, indicated strong local interest in a CDL training program.

“We didn’t realize how many people right here in the East were interested,” said Gail Nichols, Pitt Community College coordinator for entrepreneurial education. “We were a little overwhelmed.”

The college, located in Winterville, North Carolina, graduated its first CDL program students two weeks ago. The course runs for four weeks and 160 hours, with spots for six students per class. New classes start about every two weeks. Tuition is $2,435.95.

The program was formed through a partnership with Trans-Tech, a truck driving training provider.

“TransTech, like PCC, realized the need for truck drivers, and as partners, we are meeting the needs of folks in the east,” Nichols said. “Carriers are calling and looking for drivers every day, and many are willing to help with the costs of training them in order to get good employees.”
