A new survey by a provider of video information systems shows many motorists with whom truck drivers share the highways believe they are safer drivers than the men and women at the wheels of commercial motor vehicles.

In a statement about the survey, Verizon said it “identified misperceptions everyday drivers have about the level of danger posed by commercial drivers” adding “only 3% of all severe crashes in the U.S. involve commercial vehicles.”
In specific, the survey found:
- 81% of respondents said they have witnessed a commercial vehicle driving dangerously
- 69% said they witnessed a commercial vehicle speeding
- 55% said they witnessed a commercial vehicle make abrupt lane changes
- 54% percent say they have witnessed an accident involving a commercial vehicle
- 46% said they witnessed a commercial vehicle driving erratically
- 37% said they witnessed a commercial vehicle taking turns too quickly
Verizon said the online survey was conducted among 1,000 representative U.S. adults over the age of 18, between June 10 and June 17.
In a statement about the survey, the company said its Verizon Connect Integrated Video product can “help fleet managers improve safety and mitigate risk within their fleet of vehicles” and combat “misperceptions” that were identified.
