Cold temperatures can affect more than just your diesel fuel. Combined with shorter daylight, the holiday rush, and new year pressures, the winter blues can set in fast. If you're on the road for long stretches, taking care of yourself is vital. Here are some practical tips.

STAY ACTIVE: Winter can make it tough, but moving around is important. Bundle up, get out of the cab, and take a walk to stretch your legs and breathe in some fresh air. Moving helps your body and lifts your mood. If you miss sunlight, try using a therapy lamp in your cab.

STAY CONNECTED: It's easier than ever to keep in touch with family and friends when you're away. If you can't connect in person, make a daily call or video chat. If you have no one to call, stop at a truck stop restaurant. and start a conversation with another driver, reach out over the CB radio, or join an online trucking community.

FUEL YOUR BODY: We’ve all found it easy to lean on the convenience of unhealthy options. So, stock your cab with some healthy snacks and extra water so you don’t gravitate to snacks with little nutritional value. A hot, hearty, home-cooked meal can also be a source of comfort. Consider cooking in the cab, reheating a home-cooked meal, or stopping at your favorite roadside restaurant.

PRIORITIZE REST: Beat fatigue by maintaining a consistent sleep schedule. Take the time to make your cab a comfortable place to get quality sleep – perhaps a mattress topper, blackout curtains, and the perfect blanket. And try to avoid screen time just before bed.

REDUCE HOLIDAY STRESS: Feeling pressure to purchase gifts? Keep it simple. And stay within your budget. A small, thoughtful gift can speak volumes. Travel centers now have a wide variety of items to choose from. Or consider something local to where you’re traveling, or online storefronts.

ENGAGE IN A HOBBY: Listen to music, create a playlist, listen to podcasts, learn something new, keep a journal, photography, art/craft projects – the list goes on. You could even consider using your hobby to create a holiday gift!

As the air gets colder and the daylight gets shorter, be sure to prepare your truck, plan your trip, and, most importantly, take care of yourself.
