Music: Texas legend Robert Earl Keen plays bluegrass

Robert Earl Keen: his new CD drops on Tuesday.

Next week looks to be a good one if you like to fill your truck with bluegrass as you head down the road. Scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, Feb. 10 is Happy Prisoner: The Bluegrass Sessions by Robert Earl Keen. There are so many reasons to put this album into heavy rotation in your cab.

1.) It collects some of the great standards by many giants of bluegrass like the Carter Family, Richard Thompson, Flatt & Scruggs and Jimmie Rogers

2.) This is the 59-year-old Texas singer/songwriter stepping outside his normal Texas sound to embrace a genre he has always loved

and 3.) He gets a hand from other great musicians like fellow Texan Lyle Lovett, Nickel Creek’s Sara Watkins and Danny Barnes and Dixie Chick Natalie Maines.

Happy Prisoner includes 15 tracks (20 on the deluxe edition), among them Long Black Veil, T For Texas, Wayfaring Stranger White Dove and 14 Carat Mind. $12.99 on iTunes; $10 on a CD at Amazon.
