John Candy was just 43 when in 1994 he suffered a heart attack and died during the filming of Wagons East. However, the burly Canadian comedian left behind a long list of TV shows and movies that made him a box office heavyweight during the 1980s and ’90s.

John Candy as Uncle Buck

He struggled as a new Army recruit Ox Oxberger in Stripes (1981), made us laugh and cry as a shower curtain ring salesman Del Griffith in Planes Trains and Automobiles (1987) and did a brief and serious turn as Dean Andrews Jr. in Oliver Stone’s JFK (1991).

Here are five great John Candy movies that might be just what you need after a long, hot truck driving day this summer. All can be streamed on Amazon Instant Video.

Splash (1984)

Space Balls (1987)

Uncle Buck (1989)

Nothing But Trouble (1991)

Cool Runnings (1993)
