A truck driver stopped to help a bald eagle that was injured when it flew into his truck’s windshield Tuesday, April 5, holding it in his lap for about an hour until help arrived.

The Washington State Patrol said the collision occurred on Highway 16 in Port Orchard early Tuesday morning.

After the bird struck the truck’s windshield, Gary Jorgensen stopped, wrapped the eagle in his safety vest, and held the severely injured bird in his cab until police and representatives of a nearby wildlife shelter arrived.

A local TV station reports the bird died from internal injuries at the shelter.
