With Independence Day approaching on Friday, shippers across the U.S. should plan ahead for limited holiday hours. Since the holiday falls on a Friday, it’s essential to confirm hours of operation at all receiving facilities before dispatching loads.
Cargo thieves know this weekend means extended periods of unattended freight, making it a prime opportunity to target high-value shipments, according to Overhaul, a freight security firm. In 2025, there has been an increase in strategic thefts and large-scale pilferage, particularly from rail yards and near-destination facilities in major intermodal hubs.
Overhaul said organized theft crews are deploying deceptive tactics, such as posing as legitimate carriers, and the longer lead times around holiday weekends make these schemes harder to detect.
Distribution centers and warehouses also typically operate with reduced staffing or shut down entirely, creating further vulnerabilities. Shippers moving targeted goods, such as consumer electronics, high-end apparel, alcohol, or cost-dense food, should take extra precautions in preparation for the upcoming holiday weekend, Overhaul said in a statement.
Overhaul recommends thoroughly vetting all brokers, carriers, and drivers, and documenting all necessary details for each shipment. Shippers should confirm in advance if the receiver’s hours of operation will be affected by the holiday and adjust schedules as needed to avoid unnecessary staging.  
Overhaul also suggests that for over the road shipments, any stops made over the holiday period should be in well lit, secured areas with trailer doors backed to a solid surface, if possible. Facilities should ensure all security systems are functioning properly..
