The Alabama Department of Transportation is closing an exit from Interstate 59/20 North in downtown Birmingham beginning May 31.
The department said Exit 125A (17th Street/Downtown) will be closed until the summer of 2018 as a new ramp is constructed. The project is part of preparations for the replacement of bridges on the interstate. Replacement of the bridges starts in late summer or fall of 2018, according to ALDOT.
Due to expected heavy traffic flowing through Exit 125A, ALDOT has set up a detour. Traffic should should use Exit 125B for 22nd Street. To accommodate the extra traffic flow, ALDOT will turn off the traffic lights at both the I-59/20 southbound and northbound ramps at 22nd Street to create a free flow for traffic to get off the interstate and into downtown.
