A tractor-trailer jackknifed Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 18, and set in motion a chain-reaction collision on Interstate 70 that wound up involving eight other tractor-trailers and 12 passenger vehicles.
No injuries were reported in the collision that occurred in the eastbound lanes of I-70 near Byers, about 45 miles east of Denver. The Colorado State Patrol reported blowing snow created white-out conditions at the time of the incident.
The crash and winter storm conditions forced a shutdown of the highway from Airpark Road to the Kansas border.
On Tuesday, Jan. 17, four tractor-trailers were involved in a collision on westbound I-70 in Glenwood Canyon about 155 miles west of Denver.
I-70 was closed for much of the day as a hazmat crew cleaned up some 3,000 gallons of gasoline spilled from a tanker involved in the crash.
