Two people died Saturday, Jan. 6, in a 40-vehicle pileup on Interstate 5 in California that included 18 tractor-trailers.
The massive collision -- actually three separate ones near one another -- occurred around 7:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-55 about 33 miles north of Los Angeles. Heavy fog blanketed the highway at the time of the collisions.
Nine other people were injured in the collisions, which closed I-5 all of Saturday.
The California Department of Transportation visibility was down to about 10 feet when rescuers arrived.
