The New York State Thruway Authority today announced that the eastbound lanes of the Thruway (Interstate 90) from exit 60 (Westfield - Mayville - NY Route 394) to exit 59 (Dunkirk - Fredonia - NY Route 60) will temporarily shut down to traffic beginning at 5 p.m. today, April 5, through 7 a.m. Saturday, April 6.

The temporary closure is to allow crews to remove a severely damaged portion of the North Road overpass over the Thruway at milepost 473.78 in Chautauqua County. The overpass has been subject to at least three bridge strikes by overheight trucks since the beginning of the year.

The overpass is currently closed to vehicle traffic. Following multiple inspections this week, Thruway and consulting engineers determined that a damaged girder should be removed and other work completed to stabilize the overpass.

Beginning at 5 p.m. today all eastbound traffic traveling on I-90 will be diverted off of the highway at exit 60 (Westfield). Motorists should follow Emergency Detour Route “D” which will direct traffic to NY Route 394 east, to US-20 east, to Route 60 north, and reentering the Thruway at exit 59 (Dunkirk). The length of the detour is approximately 18 miles. The closure is expected to be in place for approximately 14 hours.

All westbound lanes will remain open during the operation.

The North Road overpass will be reopened with one lane of alternating traffic after Thruway engineers determine the overpass is safe.

Variable message signs on the Thruway and surrounding highways are advising motorists to avoid the area.
