A Michigan trucker suffered burns when two tractor-trailers collided on Interstate 96 in Michigan earlier this week.

The Iona County Sheriff's Office reports the collision took place shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, on westbound I-96 at Jordan Lake Road between Grand Rapids and Lansing.

The sheriffs said a 50-year-old Highland Park, Michigan man was driving a tractor-trailer when he fell asleep at the wheel. This resulted in his truck crashing into another tractor-trailer driven by an Iowa man.

The police investigation shows the Highland Park man's tractor-trailer caught fire as a result of the collision. However, police said he was able to escape out the driver’s side window. He was taken to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The Iowa driver was uninjured.

Police continue their investigation.
