Don't be surprised if you see more police cars on the road during your travels next week. Operation Safe Driver Week, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's enforcement effort in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico begins Monday and concludes on Saturday, July 19.

During Safe Driver Week, law enforcement personnel will be on the lookout for commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in unsafe driving behaviors, such as speeding, distracted driving, following too closely, drunk or drugged driving, etc. Drivers engaging in such behaviors will be pulled over by law enforcement personnel and issued a warning or citation, according to the CVSA.

The focus of this year’s special week is reckless, careless or dangerous driving. Any person who drives a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property is driving recklessly, according to the CVSA. Careless/dangerous driving is defined as operating a vehicle without due care and attention or reasonable consideration for other motorists or people on the road, the alliance said.

Last year law enforcement officers in the three countries pulled over 11,050 vehicles during Operation Safe Driver Week. They issued a total of 2,712 tickets/citations and 3,228 warnings to commercial motor vehicle and passenger vehicle drivers.

From July 7 to 13 of 2024, officers issued 2,439 warnings and 1,583 tickets/citations to commercial motor vehicle drivers and 789 warnings and 1,129 tickets/citations to passenger vehicle drivers for unsafe driving behaviors.
