President-elect Donald Trump announced a former congressman and Fox Business host as his choice to fill the position of Secretary of Transportation in his new administration.
Sean Duffy served in the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019, representing Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District. He most recently was co-host of Fox Business’ “The Bottom Line,” after joining Fox News as a contributor in 2020.
Three of the trucking industry's leading advocacy organizations commented on Trump's choice of Duffy.
The American Trucking Associations' President and CEO Chris Spear released the following statement:
“During his time in the House, Sean Duffy was focused on issues facing our industry and supported pro-trucking policies to strengthen the supply chain and our ability to keep the nation’s goods moving safely and efficiently.
“Roads and bridges are our shop floor. We know Congressman Duffy understands that and the opportunity now before us to improve our transportation network by reducing congestion, investing in truck parking, enhancing highway safety and supporting the development of innovative technologies. He is an exceptional choice to lead the Department of Transportation, and we congratulate him on his nomination and look forward to working with him in this role.”
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association President Todd Spencer's made the following statement on Duffy's nomination:
"OOIDA and the 150,000 small business truckers we represent congratulate Representative Sean Duffy on his nomination as Secretary of Transportation. We look forward to working with him in advancing the priorities of small business truckers across America, including expanding truck parking, fighting freight fraud, and rolling back unnecessary regulations. We encourage a swift confirmation in the Senate and look forward to working with the new administration.”
David Heller, senior vice president of safety and government affairs for the Truckload Carriers Association said the organization looks forward to working with Duffy. Heller said Duffy 'has always been a friend of the (trucking) industry."
He expects Duffy will be a "major player" in efforts to pass critical highway reauthorization legislation. Such legislation would be the vehicle for efforts to address numerous trucking industry concerns.
When in Congress, Duffy supported an effort by OOIDA to allow small business truckers with a strong safety record an exemption from the onerous Electronic Logging Device mandate issued by the USDOT.
Before running for Congress, Duffy served as district attorney of Ashland County, Wisconsin, from 2002 to 2008. He is also formerly a professional lumberjack athlete and ESPN color commentator. Duffy also appeared on the MTV reality show, “The Real World: Boston” in 1997. The following year, he competed in the network’s reality competition “Road Rules: All Stars."
