Briefly: ATA questions Labor nominee's stance on 'anti-trucking policies'

Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer
U.S. House of Representatives

One of the trucking industry's leading advocacy groups has an issue with President-elect Donald Trump's choice to lead the Department of Labor.

American Trucking Associations President and CEO Chris Spear Monday released the following statement on the nomination of Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer to be U.S. Labor Secretary:

“We look forward to a thorough vetting and confirmation process for Lori Chavez-DeRemer, particularly on her past positions in Congress on the PRO Act and independent contractors. These anti-trucking policies undermine our essential workforce, threaten the right of independent truckers to choose their own career path, and impede the efficiency of the supply chain. The 8.5 million men and women who work in our industry are the heartbeat of the nation, and we reserve our support for Chavez-DeRemer's nomination until we receive greater clarity from her on these issues that are so vital to our workforce."

Chavez-DeRemer is a one-term Republican congresswoman from Oregon. She was the first woman elected to congress from that state.

Registration open for Technology & Mainenance Council meeting

The American Trucking Associations has opened registration for its Technology & Maintenance Council’s Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibition.

Scheduled for March 10-13 at the Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee, the meeting and exhibition will take place on two tracks – one geared toward attendees seeking to dive deep into the details of the issues facing the industry, and the other providing a high-level overview of the technological trends that will be driving change in trucking. The ATA said both tracks will address critical issues ranging from emissions and efficiency to safety and emerging technologies, under this year’s theme – Advancing Technology Through Industry Engagement.

“The TMC Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibition is central to the council’s mission to raise professional and technical standards for the trucking industry,” said ATA President and CEO Chris Spear. “Whether it is on the exhibit hall floor, or in one of TMC’s many study groups or educational sessions and task forces, the events taking place at TMC’s Annual Meeting drive the industry’s success.“

Penske receives 'Military Friendly' recognition

Penske Transportation Solutions was recently named a 2025 Military-Friendly Gold Employer. Penske received this designation from VIQTORY, a veteran-owned business and the publisher of the G.I. Jobs and Military Spouses publications.

"Veterans excel at many different types of roles across our organization," said Jennifer Sockel, Penske executive vice president of talent and enterprise services. "Penske recognizes that veterans have a sense of teamwork, dedication, and commitment that enhances the company's workforce. We make a concerted effort to recognize and value their contributions to our success as a leading transportation services provider."

Institutions earning the Military-Friendly Employers designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey.

Final ratings were determined by combining an organization's survey score with an assessment of the organization's ability to meet thresholds for recruitment, new hire retention, employee turnover, and promotion and advancement.
