Pilot just celebrated the opening of its new travel center in Tuskegee, Alabama, just a mile from the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, and the new location honors the legacy of these trailblazing black World War II heroes.
The store’s design features a replica of the original Moton Field Control Tower, in-store signage honoring the 1,578 missions flown by the Tuskegee airmen and the 850 awards the service members and their unit received, and a replica P-51 Mustang “Red Tail” ceiling design – a tribute to the planes flown by these iconic pilots.
These airmen were part of the 99th Pursuit Squadron and were deployed to compact in North Africa ion April of 1943.
Developed in partnership with the Macon County Economic Development Authority and Tuskegee University, this project connects history, education, and community impact. Pilot celebrated the opening on Dec. 16 with a ribbon cutting, remarks from Mayor Tony Haygood, State Senator Billy Beasley, community leaders, and a $20,000 donation to the Macon County Board of Education to support local students.
Irving McConnell, local developer and supporter of the project, shared during the community celebration, "This is very special to bring Pilot to this community, because of the opportunities it will bring for jobs and the tax money that will help the schools. Just the commitment of building something in Tuskegee is the start of bringing economic development to the whole county.”
Pilot said its purpose is to "show people they matter at every turn,” and part of that includes working to recognize unique and authentic aspects of the communities they serve.
