Two people were hurt following a collision involving a railroad snow plow and a tractor-trailer in Groverton, New Hampshire Monday.
At 6:02 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, New Hampshire State Police responded to a report of a crash involving a railroad snow plow and a tractor-trailer near mile marker 173 on Route 3 in Groveton, which is located in the northern part of the state.
The troopers said in a Facebook post that their preliminary investigation determined that a railroad plow, operated by Joseph Letourneau, 22, of Derby, Vermont, was plowing snow when it became stuck in the middle of Route 3. A tractor-trailer, loaded with lumber and traveling southbound, was unable to avoid the railroad plow and struck it head on.
The tractor-trailer, driven by Edward Stone, 64, of Williamstown, Vermont, lost a portion of its load of lumber, which scattered across Route 3. The road was closed for several hours while the lumber was cleaned up. Letourneau and Stone were transported to an area hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the troopers.
The police said they determined the railroad crossing warning signs were not actively flashing after the railroad plow became stuck. The railroad plow had a single amber light on its roof, which was flashing and active at the time, according to the troopers. The tractor-trailer and railroad plow sustained heavy damage.
