Arizona cops hold enforcement blitz in honor of officer killed in 1978

Arizona law enforcement officials staged a commercial vehicle inspection effort  in honor of a fallen officer.

The enforcement detail took place Dec. 11 on Interstate 10 between Benson and Wilcox, and was done in remembrance of Officer Noah "Mack" Merrill who died in the line of duty Dec. 11, 1978. A tractor-trailer struck him during a traffic stop on I-10 near Benson.

The emphasis of detail was enforcing the “Move Over Law” and commercial motor vehicle regulations.

The results of the detail included:
  • Traffic stops: 81
  • Total citations: 48
  • Total "Move Over Law" citations: 27
  • Hazardous citations: 18
  • Total arrests: 2
  • Commercial motor vehicle inspections: 30
  • Total DVER violations: 134
  • Drivers placed out of service: 9
  • Vehicles placed out of service: 4
