Florida man charged with theft of $258,000 of copper wire, trailer

A 41-year-old Florida man was recently arrested in connection with the theft of a 53-foot-trailer loaded wiht copper wire.

In a social media post, the Kenly, North Carolina Police Department said on Aug. 14 it had received information regarding a suspected cargo theft organization operating across multiple jurisdictions. The department said it worked with out-of-state agencies to investigate that information.

During the investigation, officers located a stolen 53-foot J.B. Hunt trailer, and determined that both the trailer and its contents had been reported stolen.
 
Officers subsequently located the driver of the vehicle at a local truck stop. After a brief struggle, the subject was taken into custody. During the arrest, officers located a handgun concealed on the driver’s person.
 
As the investigation continued, officers applied for and were granted a search warrant for the trailer. During the execution of the search warrant, officers located aboiut $258,000 worth of stolen copper wire.
 
Officers arrested the driver, identified as Jarrel Lamont Nightingale, 41, of Florida. He was charged with:
  • Felony possession of stolen goods/property
  • Felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle 
  • Carrying a concealed gun
Nightingale was placed under a $20,000 secured bond.
