Briefly: Trucker busted after Indiana cops find $3.8 million in cocaine

Indiana State Police arrested a truck driver when a they found 277 pounds of cocaine in his truck.

According to a social media post, on Sept. 6, an Indiana State Police Criminal Interdiction Unit conducted a traffic stop on a commercial motor vehicle traveling eastbound on Interstate 70 in Putnam for a commercial motor vehicle inspection.

The driver, Harpreet Singh of Greenwood, Indiana, stated he was transporting an empty trailer from Memphis to Indianapolis.

During the stop, the inspection, a trooper observed the driver was operating below industry standards and the vehicle was impounded. The officer located several duffle bags containing 277 pounds of cocaine, valued at about $3.8 million.

Singh was taken into custody and transported to the Putnam County Jail.

ATA supports chameleon legislation

The American Trucking Associations today expressed support for the Registration Enforcement for Vehicle Operations of Known Evaders (REVOKE) Act.

The REVOKE Act was introduced by Congressmen Dave Taylor, a Republican from Ohio, and Shomari Figures, a Democrat from Alabama, who are the founding co-chairs of the Congressional Trucking Caucus. Their legislation would strengthen U.S. Department of Transportation authority to prevent chameleon carriers from exploiting registration systems to illegally operate on American roads.

Chameleon carriers are high-risk trucking companies that are shut down and reopen under different identities to avoid penalties, enforcement actions, insurance consequences, and public scrutiny.

“Chameleon carriers evade federal oversight by cycling through new registrations, putting everyone at risk. The trucking industry is committed to maintaining the highest safety standards on America’s highways, which is why we appreciate FMCSA’s ongoing efforts to identify and remove bad actors who attempt to circumvent the rules,” said ATA SVP of Legislative Affairs Alex Rosen.

OOIDA offers Appreciation Week special
