California Highway Patrol officers conducted a one-day enforcement effort.

On Oct. 13, CHP officers from Newhall near Los Angeles partnered with the Southern Division Commercial Unit to focus on commercial vehicle safety and compliance.

According to a social media post, officers issued a total of 279 citations, including citations for mechanical violations, improper lane use, speeding, and non-emergency stops on the freeway.

In addition, a total of 28 vehicles and 13 drivers were placed out of service for various mechanical and operator violations.

CHP Newhall took the occasion to remind truckers:
  • Never stop on the freeway unless required by an emergency or otherwise permitted by law
  • Remain in your designated lane and follow all lane-use requirements
  • Obey the posted speed limits and any speed restrictions applicable to your vehicles
  • Plan you routes ahead of time and take breaks only in legally permitted locations.
  • Conduct your pre-trip safety inspection on your vehicles prior to each trip.

ATA honors Sentry Insurance

Monday, the American Trucking Associations recognized Sentry Insurance with the 2026 Cathy Evans Highway to Victory Award for their commitment to advocacy on behalf of the trucking industry.

“At a time when lawsuit abuse continues to sharply drive up costs and threaten our industry, Sentry Insurance refused to sit on the sidelines.  Instead, they leaned in.  They brought expertise and credibility to help build the case for meaningful tort reform,” said ATA Chief Advocacy and Public Affairs Officer Henry Hanscom.

Named for longtime ATA lobbyist Cathy Evans, the Highway to Victory Award is presented annually to an ATA member who has had a significant impact on the federation’s advocacy efforts at the state and federal levels.

Over the past year, Sentry has provided invaluable data that helped quantify the real-world costs of lawsuit abuse, strengthening ATA’s policy arguments and equipping ATA’s advocacy team with compelling evidence to take to lawmakers.

Additionally, Sentry co-hosted key events with pivotal members of Congress, which were critical to advancing tort reform. Finally, Sentry has helped ATA build a broad coalition in support of tort reform by encouraging major insurance organizations to become actively involved.
