Paccar is recalling hundreds of thousands of Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks because of an issue with Bendix ECUs.
The same problem recently led to the recall of numerous Mack, Volvo and International trucks.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Paccar is recalling some 221,000 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks equipped with Bendix EC80 Advanced ECUs. The NHTSA said electrical noise and low signal to the power line carrier may cause the ECU to incorrectly process commands or stop functioning.
Some safety systems that depend on the Bendix ECU may perform poorly or completely lose functionality, increasing the risk of a crash, according to the NHTSA. The agency said those systems include automatic traction control, anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control, active cruise control and collision mitigation system.
