A tractor-trailer caught fire in San Diego Tuesday, May 9, and it prompted a chain-reaction accident on a nearby freeway.

The San Diego Union-Tribune
reports that the truck was headed west on state Route 52 near Santo Road when the driver pulled the rig over at about 10:30 p.m. Fire officials were uncertain if the driver — as yet unidentified — saw smoke or fire, but was able to pull over and get out of the cab before it became engulfed in flames.

On the nearby Scripps Ranch Freeway, a motorist stopped to assist the driver and their car was struck by another car.

Then a motorist stopped on Route 52 to help, and that person’s car was in turn hit by another.

No injuries were reported.

Police and fire officials continue to investigate.
