When a motorist fell asleep at the wheel and crashed, RM Trucking driver Melby Millirans was there to help. Millirans, from Twin Lake, Michigan, is now being recognized as a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers Association.

Millirans was on I-75 north of Ocala, Florida around 1:30 a.m. Feb. 16, when he saw an SUV ahead of him careen into a guardrail before swerving and crashing down a steep embankment into a row of trees. Millirans pulled over immediately, called 911, and made his way down the embankment to the vehicle. He found a man and his 9-year-old daughter, and stayed with them until paramedics arrived.

“When I’m driving along, I rehearse what I might do if something happened,” Millirans said. “I think doing that helped me that night. I didn’t panic. You get your thoughts together. You figure out where you’re at, call 911, grab a flashlight.”

TCA awarded Millirans a Highway Angel certificate, patch, lapel pin, and truck decals.
