Atlanta’s Tom Moreland Interchange — better known to those who must navigate it as “Spaghetti Junction” — tops the annual list of the 100 top truck freight congestion locations in the U.S.
The ranking was compiled by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) and was part of a 117-page report released Wednesday, Nov. 18.
Report details where highways become parking lots for truckers.Chicago’s Circle Interchange — Interstate 290 at Interstate 90/Interstate 94 — came in second while Fort Lee, N.J. ranked third for its junction of Interstate 95 at State Road 4 leading to the George Washington Bridge.
Texas had more locations on the list than any other state with a total of 14. Four of the top 10 bottlenecked locations were all located in Houston:
- Interstate 610 at U.S. 290,
- Interstate 10 at Interstate 45,
- Interstate 45 at U.S. 59,
- Interstate 10 at U.S. 59.
Houston had a total of 10 locations on the list, Dallas had two and Austin and Fort Worth both had one.
Washington state had the second highest number of locations on the list with nine.
ATRI’s annual report analyzes the amount of truck-oriented congestion at 250 locations across national highways. It uses data from trucking operations and software applications to generate each locations congestion impact ranking. ATRI’s latest report, titled “2015 Congestion Impact Analysis of Freight-Significant Highway Locations,” includes the top 100 congested locations.
