If your trucking takes you along Interstate 81 this week, don't be surprised if you see a greater than normal law enforcement presence. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said there will be extra enforcement on the heavily traveled interstate today through Friday, June 24.
FMCSA said that during this week's enforcement effort, state and local agencies will have beefed-up patrols on I-8 in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. The agency said police will be looking for unsafe driving behaviors like speeding, following too closely, and distracted driving.
The agency said the purpose of this special I-81 traffic enforcement is to focus on safe driving for commercial motor vehicles and the passenger vehicles operating around those large vehicles, according to the FMCSA.
A statement from the FMCSA said I-81 is one of the most heavily traveled corridors in the eastern United States. In 2018-2020, there were over 3,200 collisions on I-81 involving commercial motor vehicles in the key states of New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.
