The numbers are in for this past May's three-day International Roadcheck.
The bottom line in the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's enforcement blitz shows :
- 10,148 commercial vehicles were placed out of service
- 3,342 drivers that led to them being placed out of service
Last year, inspectors placed 9,345 commercial motor vehicle combinations and 2,290 drivers out of service.
According to the CVSA, of the 56,178 inspections conducted this year, 18.1% of vehicles and 5.9% of drivers were sidelined for out of service violations.
Of those out of service violations by drivers in the U.S. and Canada showed:
- 1,076 were for hours of service
- 810 for having no commercial driver's license
- 493 for not having a medical card
- 332 for false logs
- 170 for suspended CDL
Of the vehicle violations for the U.S., Canada and Mexico :
- 3,304 were for brake problems
- 2,899 were for tires
- 2,257 were for 20% defective brakes
- 1,737 for lights
- 1,549 for cargo securement
That being said, CVSA pointed out 81.6% of vehicles, and 94.1% of drivers did not have any out-of-service violations. Inspectors affixed 16,521 CVSA decals to power units, trailers and motorcoaches/buses.
Each year, International Roadcheck places special emphasis on a driver violation category and a vehicle violation category to highlight those aspects of the North American Standard Inspection process. This year, the vehicle focus was tires and the driver focus was false records of duty status (RODS).
Ten percent (332) of all driver out-of-service violations were for false logs/RODS. The top vehicle out-of-service violation in North America was for brakes. There were 5,561 brake-related out-of-service violations (brake systems and 20% defective brakes), accounting for 41.1% of out-of-service vehicle violations.
Additionally, the top hazardous materials/dangerous goods out-of-service violation was for loading. There were 51 out-of-service loading violations, accounting for 28.8% of all HM/DG out-of-service violations.
Since its inception in 1988, more than 1.8 million roadside inspections have been conducted during International Roadcheck. For this year’s initiative, approximately 13 vehicles per minute were inspected throughout North America, according to the CVSA.
