Making healthier choices when you grocery shop doesn’t have to be complicated or more expensive. The American Diabetes Association endorses these swaps for commonly used ingredients. These alternatives are healthier because they have less saturated fat, calories and cholesterol.
1. Swap Ground Beef for Lean Ground Turkey Breast
Replace regular ground beef with lean ground turkey breast. It has fewer calories, less saturated fat and less cholesterol.
2. Swap Butter for Olive Oil
Replace butter/margarine with olive oils, vegetable oil or trans-free margarine when cooking vegetables or proteins. They have no trans fat, less saturated fat and more heart-healthy unsaturated fats.
3. Swap Sour Cream for Non-fat Plain Yogurt (Regular or Greek)
Replace sour cream with non-fat plain yogurt when you’re making tacos, loaded baked potatoes or dips. Non-fat plain yogurt has fewer calories and less saturated fat.
