Police have charged a tow truck driver with first degree murder in connection with the shooting on I-88 in Illinois Friday, April 21 that left a Florida trucker dead.

Anthony Tillmon, 34, of Lansing, Illinois, is accused of shooting Eduardo Munoz, 43, in the eastbound lanes of I-88 west of York Road at about 4:05 p.m. Friday, according to the Illinois State Police.

Tillmon appeared for a bond hearing this morning at the DuPage County Courthouse. Bond was set at $3 million.

“The investigation indicates this was a road rage incident with no apparent ties between the victim and the suspect,” state police said in a statement.

Munoz was driving a red 2007 Volvo semi when he was shot three times. He managed to pull off the road onto the shoulder and call 911. He was taken by ambulance to Elmhurst Hospital, where he died.

“The allegations that Mr. Tillmon opened fire at another vehicle while driving on a crowded expressway are outrageous,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin. “These alleged actions put the lives of countless motorists at risk. It’s terrifying to think of how many innocent people may have been injured or killed had Mr. Munoz not been able to get his truck to the shoulder of the road after he had been shot three times. Thankfully, he was able to keep control of his vehicle and in doing so may have saved the lives of other innocent motorists.”

Police released no other details of the shooting.

However, the Daily Herald reports, “Eyewitnesses said Tillmon, a tow-truck driver, and Munoz were driving aggressively and both were seen flailing their arms, authorities said. Tillmon then fired multiple shots, hitting Munoz three times.”

Tillmon’s next court date is May 22.
