A looming Final Rule to mandate the use of electronic logging devices has been sent from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to the Office of Secretary of Transportation, moving the rule a small step closer to publication and implementation.
The DOT in its latest monthly report on the status of pending rules said the rule was sent to the OST on June 6. The rule is still projected by the DOT to be published Sept. 30, which would mean the rule would start being enforced in late 2017.
After the OST approves the rule, it will be sent to the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, its last stop before being sent back to FMCSA for publication.
The rule will mandate the use of electronic logging devices by truck operators who are required to keep records of duty status. FMCSA published a proposed e-log rule last March.
